I bought a horse today.
Meet Penny Lane, #624 at the Enumclaw Sales Pavillion September 2011 auction:
She is an approximately 7 year old stock-type mare, about 16hh.
Why would I do something so crazy, you ask? Well, I don't really know. I can't explain it. I have been "browsing" horses for sale somewhat compulsively for months, but never really felt compelled by any of them. Until this mare showed up on a message board I frequent. She was in the kill pen, ship date 9/13/11 (tomorrow!)
I agonized about her for several days. I couldn't stop thinking about her. I had every reason not to get her. Bad timing, not enough money, no place to keep her, etc. But I just couldn't get her out of my mind.
Everything seemed to fall into place over the next few days. A member of the Auction Horses message board offered to pick her up for me and gave me a great deal on board for the next month. My husband was supportive. Last night, after discussing it with him for the thousandth time in three days (LOL) I decided to go for it. This morning, I paid for her over the phone, sight unseen. She will be picked up tomorrow.
Welcome to our adventure :)
I love her face. :-) So glad she's yours.
ReplyDeleteWell, with a face like that, it's easy to see why you had to have her. What a wonderful thing to do and what a lucky, lucky mare.
ReplyDeleteHow fun!?! You gotta listen when the horse tells you she's the one.
ReplyDeleteSomething sort've similar happened with Grayson. I was all ready to adopt him from the United States Equine Rescue League when my 10-year-old car unexpectedly died. I had to tell his foster that I couldn't take him but I was going to buy a new car and then I'll be back.
I bought the car and went back from the horse but someone else already had dibs on him. But for some lucky star, he was lame the day the other woman went to look at him. Turns out he was kicked in the field and the boo boo just haven't shown itself yet. The rescue league wont adopt out lame horses (unless they're listed as companions) and the woman didn't want to wait for him. I waited! :)
I bought a brand new car and a horse in the same month. Oye. Probably not the smartest thing but I don't have a single regret. He had too be fine.
Anyhow, sorry to be so long winded. I love your decision to buy...and yes, like eventer79 said, she's a lucky girl!
Ok so I just backed up and read everything from start and I am SO excited for you! This is a CRAZY adventure! I am pumped to follow along with you on this journey. You did a great thing taking that sweet mare from the kill pen. I think it will be a very rewarding and challenging endeavor for you! PLEASE keep us updated and PLEASE take LOTS of pictures!!!!!
